Purple City
On 2 april 2015 Thailand celebrated the 60th birthday of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. She was born on a saturday. On saturday the color of the day is purple. Therefore her royal flag is purple.
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn owns a house in Uthai Thani. Therefore the citizens of Uthai Thani show their love and loyalty even more.
To honor Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn the houses in the city centre were painted purple. Even water in the fountain in the city centre, close to the market, was colored purple.
Lots of people were walking around in purple clothing for days before 2 april, but on Her Royal Highness’ birthday not a single person wore anything else as purple. Luckily my husband and I wore purple. That would have been awkward.
At 7 pm the citizens of Uthai Thani gathered at the big clock on the roundabout. There was a stage where people could donate their gift for Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. After the ceremony the national anthem was turned on and everybody lit a candle. The majority of the candles were purple. Like all celebrations they finished with fireworks.
Apparently the purple coloured houses attracts lots of tourists and Uthai Thani got the name ‘Purple City’.
