Wan Visakha Bucha or Buddha Day

Wan-Visakha-Bucha-banner Wan Visakha Bucha / Wisakha Bucha Day or Buddha Day is the most important Buddhist holiday in Thailand. It is celabrated on the sixth lunar months which usually falls in May. In 1999 Wan Visakha Bucha or Buddha Day was recognized by UNESCO as “World Heritage Day”.

Wan Visakha Bucha or Buddha Day is the celebration of the three important milestones in the life of The Lord Buddha : his birth, his enlightenment and his passing away. The Lord Buddha’s enlightenment took place on his 35th birthday. He passed away on his 80th birthday.

On Wan Visakha Bucha or Buddha Day Buddhists will offer food to monks in the morning, listen to sermons on teachings of The Lord Buddha and make merit at temples.

Wan Visakha Bucha is a public holiday. As it is a religious holiday alcohol sale is prohibited in shops, bars and restaurants.
