Kaeng Sopha Waterfall

Kaeng Sopha Waterfall or Namtok Kaeng Sopha is located 71,5 km from Phitsanulok center on Highway number 12. Kaeng Sopha Waterfall is supposed to be the largest waterfall located on Highway number 12. I do have to say I have seen awesome pictures of it and I can immagine that it’s the biggest during the rainy season.

To me it was a disappointment, as rainy season is already started (begin July), I thought it would be worthwhile to visit already.

The disappointment started at the gate. The gatekeeper asked 500 Baht entrance per person. I showed my Thai ID and she kept on saying it is 500 Baht per person while I could clearly see the sign that 500 Baht is the foreigners entrance price. A bit sceptical I asked if it was worth that amount of money as I was visiting with my husband and a friend of his. She hesitated to answer my question, so I decided to take a look by myself and paid 50 Baht (20 baht for me and 30 baht for the car). My husband and his friend stayed at the gate while I went to check out if it was worth a 1000 Baht entrance for the 2 of them.

I drove 2km into the national park and arrived at a huge parking. Two park rangers were sitting at the gate. I showed them my entrance tickets. They pointed indifferent to the waterfall, they couldn’t care less if I paid or not. I walked trough the park. It was a clean park, the first waterfall where I saw trash cans.

There were many places provided to sit and have a picnic. That is clever and nicely done.

I passed 5 people, 4 farangs and 1 thai person. The 4 farangs didn’t seem amused at all. I was thinking, they paid 2000 bath to see this and none of them seemed happy about it. When I approached Kaeng Sopha Waterfall I could imagine how they felt. I paid 50 Baht and I was very disappointed. There was nothing beautifull about it this time of the year. The water was brown and the waterfall was very small.

I am not of the opinion of not going to Kaeng Sopha Waterfall at all, but certainly don’t go during the dry seasons and try to wait for rainy season to have had some tropical rain showers. I will visit the waterfall again in a month or two, but I will check it out before paying 500 Baht for my husband.

I know it’s not the rangers fault, they are only obeying the government rules, but 500 Baht for a foreigner and 20 Baht for a farang is ridiculous enough already. They should be ashamed to ask that much of a difference during dry seasons. We had 10 beers for the 1000 Baht we didn’t spend and it was worth it!
